The Governor's Café at the Old Castlemaine Goal has sprawling views of Castlemaine and beyond.
For third generation local Calum, owner of the said Gaol, this was the ideal locale for him to share what would make a perfect weekend getaway itinerary in these historic parts.
“If you’re into riding then you have to bring your bike and hit the Castlemaine to Maldon Rail Trail. Take a picnic in a backpack and a bottle of local wine, and you’re sorted. Then, of course, there’s the newly opened Mountain Bike Park in Harcourt Valley. That’s more for your serious mountain bikers, but it’s not to be missed.
After a ride, you obviously have to come here to the Gaol to do the adults only Breakout, where you have to try and escape from one of the prison cells in 45 minutes by solving a series of clues. Then head to the Governor’s café for a Moto Bean coffee or a glass of Holgate’s beer… after Breakout you might need the beer.
If you’re into music like I am, then you can’t go past The Bridge Hotel for new music. Then there’s the Theatre Royale for an old-fashioned cinema experience and some great live music gigs. We also put on live music now once a month on Friday and Saturday nights.
For those into all things vintage and artisan, go to the Mill in Castlemaine where you’ll uncover antiques, vintage upcycled treasures and some terrific food and beer. “
