VulgarGrad

VulgarGrad

Jul 31, 2021,18:30 - Jul 31, 2021,22:00

Palais-Hepburn111 main Rd,Hepburn Springs, VIC3461 Map

VulgarGrad bring you the old songs of the Russian thieves (blatnie pesny or blatnyak), along with punk classics of the Perestroika era.

SATURDAY, JULY 31st, 2021
Tickets: $25 Door: $30
Dinner & Show: 3 course, Modern Australian Cuisine: $105. Limited Tickets available, Guaranteed front seating.
Doors: 6:30pm. Show: 8pm-10pm
Dinner times Pre show : 6:30pm, 6:45pm, 7pm, 7:30pm.
Genre: Jazz, Contemporary Acoustic perestroika punk.
Sometimes good men do bad things…..
VulgarGrad arose in Melbourne in late 2004 out of a collaboration between some of Australia’s best musicians in underground ethnic styles and the incredible vocal talents of one Australia’s most formidable stage and screen actors, Jacek Koman. Since that time they have been stalwarts of Australia’s live music and festival scene, proving that what Australian audiences really seem to need is a wild night of old-fashioned Russian criminality. After all, if Russia and Australia have anything in common, it’s convicts.
Throughout the twentieth century, criminal culture always played a strong, if unofficial part in Russian cultural life, and this was never more highly developed than in the thieves’ songs, or blatnye pesni – performed by, for, and about criminals in the prisons, gulags and seedy bars of Soviet and post-Soviet Russia. Famous exponents of the genre include Leonid Utesov in the 1920s and 30s, Arkady Severny and the great Vladimir Vysotsky in the 60s and 70s, while more recently, groups such as Leningrad and La-Minor have incorporated the blatnyak style and lyrical content (prison, Mama, drinking, and stealing) into their contemporary acoustic punk and ska sound. VulgarGrad combine the best of these traditions with a dash of perestroika punk and their own inimitable brand of gulag swing to produce something that transcends the language barrier by aiming straight for your convict heritage and your dancing feet.
The band delivers this music with style, raucous menace, stripy shirts and a smattering of grim smiles.
Legend of stage and screen, Jacek Koman (Children of Men, Moulin Rouge, Romulus My Father, Australia) is the genial but vengeful front man who roars with the voice of a man betrayed, and he is backed by a gang of Australia's most illustrious ex-cons drawn from bands such as The Blue Grassy Knoll, Zulya and the Children of the Underground, Croque Monsieur, Bombay Royale, and The Puta Madre Brothers. The Line-up is guitar, drums, trombone, trumpet, accordion, and watch out for the largest, most triangular instrument of them all, the mighty contrabass balalaika.
With songs the likes of “Anarchy is Our Mother” & “A Piss-Up Begins With a Bottle”, this is vodka-fuelled oompah swing ska punk - gulag-style.

Aug 6, 2021,20:00 - Aug 6, 2021,22:00

The Red Hill Hotel163 Main RdChewton, VIC3451 Map

Funk Junkies come together to celebrate and share their love of funk music. A collection of some of Central Victoria's best musicians, with backgrounds in jazz, blues, soul, classical, punk and everything in between, these guys are happiest when they let the groove take over and channel the irrepressible sounds of the 70's. Most recently the Funk Junkies have been writing and performing their own original funk tapestries, but they still make time to play the grooves that first brought them together, by funk masters like The JBs, Idris Muhammad, Grover Washington Jr, Curtis Mayfield, The Meters and many more. Founding band members include Stephen Briggs on keys, Chris Blackshaw on bass and Colin Thompson on drums. Brendan Bell has taken the guitarist role in his stride and solidified the rhythm section, while Brendan Bartlett leads the horn section on trombone, with Harrison Godfrey on sax and Michael Parker, the newest full-time Funk Junky on trumpet. This is the band that will take you to groove town, while they lay out a set of what Maceo Parker so fondly called "happy music!".

Free entry gig, but please use the 'tip jar' if you like what you hear.

A Little Bit Mongolian - film and performance

St Ambrose Hall, Templeton Street, Woodend

UPDATED DETAILS: New date Saturday 7 August. Now two showings - 1pm and 4pm. Venue changed to St Ambrose Hall.

A Little Bit Mongolian

Film and live performance (2-hours)

Michael Dillon introduces his multi-international award winning film about Angus Paradice, a 12 year old Australian horse rider who dares to race with local Mongolian children in their dangerous long distance horse races.

Despite a bad fall in a training race, he gets back on the saddle and does well, wins the respect of everyone, and in the process becomes ‘a little bit Mongolian’.

Then it will be our turn to become a little bit Mongolian, for one of the delights of the film is its wonderful music score complete with throat and harmonic singing, the latter by none other than Australia’s world class virtuoso in the field, Dean Frenkel. Dean will be with us and will astonish us with a live performance of many forms of harmonic singing. He will then take our own voices where we thought they couldn’t go, through a first lesson in an ancient artform we are all capable of mastering.

All tickets for this session are $30.

St Ambrose Hall, Templeton Street, Woodend

Beethoven Octet in E-flat Major Op. 103

Raff Sinfonietta for 10 wind instruments, Op. 188

The Beethoven Octet is a key work in the small wind ensemble repertoire. Though it was composed in 1793 (and reworked in 1795 to become his first String Quartet, Op. 4), the Octet itself was published posthumously in 1834 which accounts for its high opus number. It is part of a tradition of Harmoniemusik which was popular during the late 18th and early 19th centuries as background music at dinners and social events. Joachim Raff’s Sinfonietta, composed 80 years later in 1873, was intended to take this tradition of writing for smaller wind groups popularised by Mozart’s Serenadesand continued with the Octet of Beethoven and turn it into something even more impressive: Thus, the work is written for a fully doubled wind quintet. The Sinfonietta was composed during “the cultural high point” of Raff’s life and the piece attained significant popularity at the time of its composition. Though Raff’s music was widely known and admired in his time (even surpassing Brahms in popularity!) it is now rarely performed.

The MCM Winds is a staff / student ensemble, featuring leading wind faculty members from the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music, David Griffiths, Derek Jones, Lyndon Watts and Carla Blackwood, performing alongside the talented students of the MCM.

Afternoon Jazz with the Melbourne Octet

Afternoon Jazz with the Melbourne Octet

Aug 8, 2021,14:30 - Aug 8, 2021,15:30

St Ambrose Church Woodend Victoria.Woodend, VIC Map

The Melbourne Octet will present an afternoon of close harmony jazz arrangements.

Much of the repertoire in this programme was written in a period of history that saw recovery from a war and a devastating pandemic followed by the rule of several dictators across the world, mass unemployment, discrimination against and persecution of various groups, and unrest in international relations. Nearly a century later, the world has a disturbingly similar set of circumstances.

The lighthearted, slightly naughty, uplifting songs of this period were an escapist remedy for the times. Sumptuous harmonies, witty lyrics and cheerful melodies are an excellent distraction.

The programme was devised during the prolonged lockdown last year, when a desire to escape, a nostalgia for a mythical land of the past (which wasn’t ever perfect, but seemed to shine in comparison to the present), and a craving to let loose and run wild were recurring themes. A couple of more recent jazz compositions are thrown in the mix - the similarities to earlier pieces are surprising, and should come with a warning; you’ll be humming them all the way home.

Revenge, Justice and The Lost Lovelies Foundation

Aug 8, 2021,15:00 - Aug 8, 2021,16:00

St Ambrose Hall, Templeton Street, Woodend 3442. Map

Where is the line between revenge and justice? Dr Sally Cockburn and Beth Wilson take a deep dive into the many medico-legal issues explored in Beth‘s debut novel, The Lost Lovelies Foundation, to examine whether some victims’ desire for revenge is incompatible with healing, locking them into perpetual victimhood. The influence of single issue charities can strongly influence government policies on criminal justice, sentencing and can limit judicial discretion. Don’t be put off by the seriousness of these issues. Sally and Beth are both funny and intelligent women who are not afraid to tackle difficult and sensitive topics including how to safely fictionalise these dilemmas.

Heads up! You're bound to have heard both these speakers on radio hundreds of times before! We are looking forward to hearing them at this year's festival.

Beth is a former Health Services Commissioner and Sally is a General Practitioner and media health advocate with over 30 years experience. Sally also has a Masters in Health and Medical law.

Blessed with an angelic voice, deft at lyrical wordplay and armed with a seemingly in exhaustive melody well, Conway - and partner Zygier - create songs which become best friends for life.

If Bob Dylan or Leonard Cohen delivered an album with songs as good as these, the critical response would be rapturous. Conway and Zygier deserve no less.’ Courier Mail
‘Some of the most engaging songs I’ve ever heard from Deborah & Willy. Some of the music makes the little hairs on my neck and arms stand at attention. That doesn’t happen often. ‘

‘The latest offering from the Conway-Zygier team is simply outstanding.’ Canberra Times
“Conway and Zygier seem to have enveloped an intimate, down-home, folk-blues sound that’s deeply relatable. The songs tend to wrap around you, like a favourite throw, or big, old jumper does, as you curl-up on the couch with your favourite melancholic thoughts.” J-Wire
“Right from the beginning this talented musical duo generate a powerful energy that both leaves the audience breathless and gives them the space to enjoy song-by-song their new album.” Arts Hub review of The Toff In Town, Melbourne
“If there was ever an Australian act that could be said to have maintained professional integrity alongside lyrical honesty in the wake of mainstream commercial popularity, Deborah Conway is easily that artist.” Faster Louder review of Tilley’s, Canberra
“Alongside Paul Kelly, Deborah Conway is the most consistent and important singer- songwriter we have. She is a true original.” - Steve Moffat Daily Telegraph
“It is a challenge to find any musical work Conway has been involved with that isn't simply magnificent.” – Sydney Morning Herald
“Deborah Conway and Willy Zygier, homegrown epic singer/songwriter duo, craft songs rich with meaning, metaphor and prophecy, drawn together with expert lyrical simplicity. Incredible, captivating and riveting every time...” Byron Echo review of Bello Festival
