We have you covered

Some days, you feel like a classic pub meal in a warm, friendly, bustling pub, washed down with a pint. Others, you want to treat yourself to a degustation with paired wine at a hatted restaurant. Time, budget and circumstances can all influence where you decide to eat.

Fortunately, our small region has an abundance of goldrush era (and modern) pubs and taphouses to choose from, along with the highest concentration of ‘hatted’ restaurants in a regional area.

Let’s start fancy:

Unless you come from outer space, you have heard of Lake House, a grand establishment overlooking Lake Daylesford. Described by Gourmet Traveller magazine recently as the ‘OG of destination dining in Victoria’ it helped put Daylesford on the map and over 40+ years has continued to exceed expectations. They also have luxe accommodation, spa treatments and a wonderful pool. It is a true ‘bucket list’ experience. Executive Chef, Alla Wolf-Tasker and her crew use predominantly local produce, much of which is grown at their nearby property Dairy Flat Farm.

Not far away is a perennial fave, Sault. Set amongst fields of lavender and sourcing much of its produce from its kitchen garden and local producers, the focus is on sustainability and top-notch service – with a view. The menu changes with the seasons, and you can choose from a three, four or seven course menu, kids are also catered for with a littlies’ menu. Sault was named after a small French township renowned for its lavender, in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region of South-eastern France. As you dine within this beautiful country house you will feel as though you have been transported deep into the heart of France.

If French is your flavour, you can’t go past Bistro Terroir, in the heart of Daylesford. Wine lovers will know that ‘terroir’ refers to the complete natural environment in which produce is grown, and this restaurant leans heavily on the quality local produce our region is famous for, grown in rich volcanic soil. Chef and owner Matthew Carnell worked his way through France, acquiring skills at a Michelin 2-star restaurant and produces food that is hearty and delicious. The wine list is also extensive and the atmosphere is inviting and unpretentious.

Back near Lake Daylesford, Boathouse Daylesford is set on the very edge of the lake, offering beautiful views and a relaxed atmosphere. The outdoor deck is perfect in the warmer months, while the ambiance indoors is also lovely. Professional service and quality fare, this is a great option… ideal for a cosy date night or a longer lunch with friends. Lunches are a la carte and dinners are two, three or four courses.

Tuki

If you feel like quality food, in a truly rural setting, with sublime views, we highly recommend Tuki. Located on the ‘Stoney Rises’ the panoramic views are the about the only thing that might distract you from the excellent food. Tuki is also a trout farm so you can catch trout (regardless of how poor you are at fishing) and you can also stay in one of their charming cottages. Fine dining, rural scenes, incredibly friendly hosts (Jan and Robert are just lovely), this is a place where memories are made.

If you’re in more of a ‘beer and burgers’ mood, look no further than local favourite, Daylesford Brewing Co, located in the heart of Daylesford. Of course, the menu extends beyond just burgers, but boy they are tasty burgers. Owner Dave Gill is also a brewer and there is a range of his excellent beers on tap. A warm and welcoming vibe makes this a great place to while away a couple of hours and they occasionally have live music to add to the already-cool vibe.

Nestled in the heart of our region, just 20 minutes from Daylesford, Kyneton, or Woodend, Trentham is a charming town that punches above its weight food-wise. Embracing the ‘pub vibe’, check out Hotel Trentham. Retaining its 1920s charm, this pub was recently renovated by a team which included NBA star Chris Anstey. With the motto “There Are No Strangers Here – Just Friends You Haven’t Met Yet,” the hotel embodies the welcoming spirit of a classic country pub, perfect for the whole family. Enjoy great food, a wide range of libations, regular live music and cosy onsite accommodation.
