Art Galleries in the Daylesford and Macedon Ranges region dip into your guts and rip out a response.
There is nothing conventional about showcasing art in this region. There are no quiet rooms, with perfectly positioned lighting and no intimidating gallery curators dressed in black speaking in a strange metaphorical language. The Convent in Daylesford is, as its name suggests, an old Convent. Spend hours wandering collections from both emerging and international artists. It’s the perfect atmospheric venue for a Winter’s day.
Then there’s Stockroom in Kyneton. This old butter factory showcases contemporary art in a way that is accessible to everyone. Stockroom is owned and curated by acclaimed sculptor Jason Waterhouse and creative Magali Gentric. They strategically position art, with fashion and every-day objects and stir them about in a way that has you seeing how the art would look in your own home. The gentle, giant, horse of a dog that wanders around is a bonus.
Internationally famous artist, David Bromley, is a Hepburn Shire resident. His studio and shop in Vincent St, Daylesford will have your artistic sensibilities turning whirly-gigs of pleasure. David’s paintings, sculptures and objets d’art are all on display along with his wife Yuge’s range of designer clothes. You’ve never seen anything like it.
Then there is the MAD Gallery in Lancefield. An eclectic arts hub with a café, this unique venue also plays host to open mic nights and poetry recitals. While you are in the Macedon Ranges check out the Macedon Arts trail. They offer appointments with an artist in their studio. There is no better way to find the perfect piece than to speak with the artist who created it.
Whilst in Mt Macedon, make sure you visit The Gallery which showcases a diverse range of work from local artists. Check out paintings, pottery, photography, jewellery, mosaic, glass, woodwork, origami and textiles and look up the current exhibition with changes on a monthly basis. Not to be missed is the Castlemaine Art Museum. This place is a sensory celebration of Australian artists, with works by the likes of Tom Roberts and Frederick McCubbin. You might even feel a little patriotic pride when you wander these halls at all our Australian talent.
Well worth a visit, while you are in Daylesford, is Stony Creek Gallery. Startling contemporary works by resident artist Michael Parker and other Australian artists are on display in the beauty and serenity that is the Daylesford bush. You may also get a glass of bubbles on arrival…need I give you more incentive?
So, hop out of your pyjamas and off the couch, don a warm coat, scarf and hat and head to the Daylesford and Macedon region for a day of art in galleries that will stir up creative juices and leave you longing for more.
