The Kyneton Campaspe River Walk is an easy and picturesque walk along the meandering Campaspe River. The walk starts at the Mollison Street bridge, at the Kyneton Botanic Garden entrance, and takes you along the river to the bottom of Piper Street and further along to the Kyneton Racecourse. In all, it's around 3kms and can take up to 2 hours return. Pass by the Kyneton Botanic Gardens, they are over 160 years old and include many notable trees. They provide a lush canopy and sweeping lawns making for a magnificent picnic place. In recent years a community park has been added to the gardens with BBQ’s, swings, toilets and a water play area. There are historical markings along the way and little wooden bridges and weirs along the river. The track itself is a combination of gravel, hard surfaces and timber walkways. They are suitable for walking or riding. It's a walk you can do over and over, as it is different each time you undertake it. The river can be low in summer, showing rock pools and little ripples, to a large free-flowing river after winter and spring rain. In autumn, the established trees and gardens are extraordinarily beautiful.

Historic Pig Shelter

The historic open shed, now serving as a picnic shelter, was brought to the gardens in 1972. It was relocated from the old livestock saleyards, which were on Market Street.  Built circa late 1800s it was used to shelter pigs and calves from the weather.

Platypus

The upper Campaspe River system is home to these remarkable creatures.  They are known to come out of their burrows around dusk to hunt for small aquatic creatures.  If you are lucky, you may see one paddling in the river as you walk by.

Historic Ford and Ruins of Crossbridge

Weirs and crossings can be found along the Campaspe River Walk.  They were built to control the water for industry and recreation.  This ford also acted as a boundary to what was once a swimming pool.  The remains can be seen with '1935' cut into the base of the tower.
