Funk Junkies play The Red Hill Hotel, Chewton

Oct 22, 2021,20:00 - Oct 22, 2021,22:00

The Red Hill Hotel163 Main RdChewton, VIC3451 Map

Funk Junkies come together to celebrate and share their love of funk music. A collection of some of Central Victoria's best musicians, with backgrounds in jazz, blues, soul, classical, punk and everything in between, these guys are happiest when they let the groove take over and channel the irrepressible sounds of the 70's. Most recently the Funk Junkies have been writing and performing their own original funk tapestries, but they still make time to play the grooves that first brought them together, by funk masters like The JBs, Idris Muhammad, Grover Washington Jr, Curtis Mayfield, The Meters and many more. Founding band members include Stephen Briggs on keys, Chris Blackshaw on bass and Colin Thompson on drums. Brendan Bell has taken the guitarist role in his stride and solidified the rhythm section, while Brendan Bartlett leads the horn section on trombone, with Harrison Godfrey on alto sax, Michael Parker on trumpet, and Ben van Nieuwkerk the newest full-time Funk Junky on tenor sax. This is the band that will take you to groove town, while they lay out a set of what Maceo Parker so fondly called "happy music!".

Free entry gig, but please use the 'tip jar' if you like what you hear.

Dave Graney and Clare Moore -- duo with guitars/vibes/keys/melodica

However they choose to play, they bring their story and their songbook which stretches to over 40 albums. They make show like few others. During the initial Melbourne pandemic lockdown they started doing online shows every week, sometimes twice a week and revisited songs from all these albums as well as workshopping new material. They kept their performing nerve and playing and writing skills sharp. Then the lockdown eased and they played some shows around Australia. Then the lockdown came back again.
Lucky their lockdown nerves held too.
They had been planning a rock album with their band, the mistLY but times didn’t allow it so they made their own album in their studio. The duo’s album is a classic Compact Disc packed with too many songs for vinyl. It’s an album for the freaks called EVERYTHING WAS FUNNY.
They’ll be playing some of it – mixed in with old classics from their songbook – along with some choice interpretations of other peoples songs in this late 2021 tour of Regional Victoria.
When people ask you in the future, “what was it like in those years-2020-2021?” You can begin by stroking your chin and saying …”weeelll… everything was funny”…

Learn the ancient art of creating Corn Dollies from straw, traditionally used to house the harvest-spirit until returning her to the land during the tilling the following year. These days dollies represent luck and prosperity as well as being beautiful additions to your home that can be treasured for years.

In this all-day workshop, your teacher Elizabeth will walk you through the basics of straw art, the materials you need and the introductory knots, plaits and weaves before helping you to create your very own corn dollies to take home and treasure.

This art was nearly lost with the introduction of mechanised harvesting and the change in varieties of cereal grains but was preserved by a small guild in the UK who found thatching straw was perfect for the craft. One of these artisans was Elizabeth's mother who taught her as a child, igniting a lifelong passion for the craft. On moving to Australia, Elizabeth continued the craft using wheat and other cereals she found grown locally.

A delicious lunch will be provided created from all local organic produce and able to cater for any dietary requirements you may have. We also provide you with a divine afternoon treat and tea and coffee facilities are available throughout the course.

Pennyweight perform beautifully lyrical original folk songs woven with rich stories of everyday people, places and landscapes. Continuing the folk tradition of story songs, and songs that comment on the world around us, Pennyweight have won over audiences and festivals and venues in Central Victoria since they formed in 2010.
The band features the music of award songwriter Tony English ( Guitar, Banjo and Vocals) and accompanied by Denis Toner (Double Bass).
Tony has won numerous awards including the Roddy Read Songwriting Contest at the Maldon Folk Festival for his song ‘Leaving Liverpool’. His songs are inspired by topics that reflect Australia's multiple histories; from life on the 1850s Victorian Goldfields, to the hardships of English child migrants in 1940s Central West New South Wales, the trials of Diggers on the Kokoda Track, and the strength of Aboriginal people's connections to Country.
Pennyweight have recorded two albums, "Keys and Change" (2012) and "Took the Silence" (2015).
Reviews:
Pennyweight have a rare talent for distilling the timeless and engaging elements of folk music. You could put this record on twenty years from now and it would be just as satisfying because it's played and sung with heart and imagination.

Everyone will be provided with appropriate sized bases of glass for their projects to ensure a solid finished piece after firing. Then working with glass pieces, frits, powders, stringers, and beads you will create and glue your designs ready for firing. Depending on designs, skills such as bending and shaping stringers, cutting glass and creating layering effects can be taught one on one during the session.
