Antiques, curiosities & gardenalia in an historic former pub
Mrs Murphy’s offers an eclectic selection of Australian and European antiques, unique curiosities and vintage garden wares, in the circa 1865 gold rush era former Commercial Hotel, located on Trentham’s charming main street.
Whether it’s a quintessential country house French bedside table, antique seedling pots for the greenhouse, a handsome Georgian English oil portrait for above the fireplace or a vintage travel rug and basket for the perfect picnic….there is something for everyone who appreciates patina at Mrs Murphy’s.
Established in 2021 by Melissa Hider, an avid collector whose first piece was a sticker covered circa 1910 steamer trunk for her 21st birthday, each piece in store is thoughtfully chosen to reflect the charm and nostalgia of a by-gone time. She loves the challenge of sourcing unique pieces on request for individuals searching for items for their home, film shoot or event.
Whilst the store is an ever evolving curation of gorgeous pieces, staples include French copper, pine and oak furniture, fine porcelain and earthenware , silver cutlery, antique linens, hand cut crystal drink ware, cane market baskets and garden urns. Think a mix of fine antiques with a bit of rustic vintage thrown in….everything from homewares, to objects d’art, to unique gifts.
The store’s name is a nod to the original owner of the Commercial Hotel, Irish immigrant Mary Murphy, who built the hotel during the Victorian gold rush with her husband Patrick. Melissa’s own Irish descendants arrived in Australia in the 1860s and were shop keepers in inner Sydney, so after starting out in retail in the 1990s followed by a 30-year corporate marketing career, she feels she has come full circle and finally found her happy place in Trentham.
Open Friday to Sunday, 10am to 4pm. Why not plan a visit to our beautiful little town and pop in and say hello.
